How Effective is Teeth Whitening?

Everybody can benefit from having his or her teeth whitened. There are many causes for tooth discoloration such as aging, smoking, and drinking coffee. These are just a few of the many causes that may cause tooth discoloration.

As tooth whitening grows in popularity, the research that tooth care companies are doing is expanding even more rapidly. There are two main types of teeth whitening: those done by cosmetic dentist and the kits sold for use at home. How effective is teeth whitening? It will depend on which type you use and how much you can afford to spend on treatments.

Cosmetic dentistry offers the most effective methods of teeth whitening. In office, tooth whitening is also the safest. The dentist will first do a complete examination of your teeth to see if they are in good enough condition to have the treatment. If your teeth are healthy enough for treatment the dentist will then determine which type of treatment will be the most effective teeth whitening for you.

At home, kits are an option to in-office teeth whitening. Do not expect the at-home kits to be as effective teeth whitening as in-office treatments the chemical they use is not as strong as the chemical that a dentist can use. An at-home kit can run from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars, the more expensive ones generally work better. One thing to look for is the seal of the ADA, make sure that whichever kit you choose has this seal on it.

For the most part, tooth whitening is effective, but there can be some short-term issues you will have to contend with. The bleach that is used can cause short-term soreness or sensitivity to your teeth and gums. Any dental work that you have, such as crowns, will only return to their original color and can look different from the rest of your teeth after completion of the treatments.

Even if you decide to use one of the at-home kits, you should have a consultation with a dentist. He can tell you which of the kits will suit you best since different stains need different chemicals. This will allow you to purchase a kit that will be having the most effective teeth whitening. Speak with an experienced cosmetic dentist at our cosmetic dentistry practice in Wayne, New Jersey. Either of our skilled dentists will help you determine if teeth whitening is the right solution for you.
